"What does pursuing further education mean to you?"

While I pursue a master's degree in bioethics (MBE) at night, I also work in the marketing department of a health care system during the day. I joined the marketing department to learn about health message origination from an inside perspective. Developing marketing to attract new consumers has raised a slew of ethical questions for me. I have grappled with the ethics of what we do and how we do it largely because of my dual role as a patient and employee of the health system. As I prepare to delve deeper into my career, I am committed to developing my marketing skill-set and expanding my knowledge of the health care industry. However, I will always remain, above all, grounded in my role as a patient who personally relies heavily on the same health system where I work.

There are fundamental bioethical issues that underlie all aspects of health care delivery and marketing. I feel that it is my personal duty to actively wrestle with and understand these issues from their core and advocate for the moral rights of fellow patients. After all, no matter what professional position I may eventually assume, I will always be a patient first and foremost, and I believe that it is precisely my "patient orientation" that will propel me to rise in the health care industry. The MBE program will provide me the opportunity to systematically explore central bioethical issues and leverage my patient perspective and voice as a professional in the health care industry.
