"What does pursuing further education mean to you?"

In entering medical school, I desired to assist patients in fulfilling their dreams as had been done for me; I longed to make the decisions that would heal. Yet two years into medical school, I know this is not always possible.  How many times have I heard professors stand in front of class and say, "I don't know?"  They state this, and we see in their answers the responses we will have to give to patients.  Sometimes healing is beyond the reach of any human hand. Even then, though, I will not say, "There is nothing more to be done."  Until at last time slips away from being, there is always something to do. I want to learn what our rapidly-accumulating knowledge has to offer.  Yet, when our pride fails us, the true attribute of the medical profession is laid bare:  the eyes, the gentle touch, the silence waiting for the patient's words to come.  This is what the medical profession is, and has been long before it had the knowledge it has today.  Long before it had the weapon of knowledge, it had the power of love. This is the meaning of my time, not only so that I can learn the knowledge that saves, but also to learn that which came before-to learn how to act out love when the things we know vanish and we are left facing a patient with the unseen all around.  This is the truest, highest call of medicine.
